College of Arts and Letters

If you have earned a C or better in ENGL 110C English Composition and completed 26 credit hours you may contact your chosen major department directly for major declaration: http://ww2.odu.edu/ao/registrar/graduation/candidates/advisors.shtml

Students with less than 26 credit hours and/or have not earned credit for ENGL 110C (English Composition) are required to be advised through the main advising center in the Batten Arts and Letters Building (BAL), room 1006.  The advisors to contact are Matilda Cox mcox@odu.edu or 757-683-3949 and Morgan Morrison mcmorris@odu.edu or 757-683-6441. Darden College of Education

Batten College of Engineering and Technology

To declare your major in the Batten College of Engineering and Technology, you must meet the following criteria:  Successful completion of ENGN 110C and 211C, have earned 30 credit hours towards the degree, have an overall GPA of a 2.0 or better, and meet any other specific departmental admissions requirements (such as a "C or better" in ENGL 110C, MATH 162M and MATH 163 for Engineering Technology or MATH 211 and MATH 212 for Engineering majors; and completed at least PHYS 231N for Engineering majors and PHYS 111N for Engineering Technology majors.  Contact the Engineering Fundamentals Division in room 132 Kaufman Hall or call (757) 683-5877 for more information. 

Students admitted to the University who are interested in pursuing a degree in an Engineering or Engineering Technology field who have not met the criteria to declare a major are advised under the following:

Math 102M placement: Students beginning the engineering program with placement in MATH 102M-College Algebra are advised by the Academic Success Advisor, Ms. Tania Alvarez. Appointments may be made online at https://shibboleth-odu-csm.symplicity.com/sso/ by selecting EN Tania Alvarez or by emailing talvarez@odu.edu. Ms. Alvarez is in room 129-G, Kaufman Hall.

MATH 162M placement or higher levels of math: Students with placement in a math course beyond College Algebra are advised by Ms. Bonita Anthony, the Assistant Director of the Engineering Fundamentals Division. Appointments may be made online at https://shibboleth-odu-csm.symplicity.com/sso/ by selecting EN Freshman Advisor, Bonita Anthony-KAUF 132 or by emailing banthony@odu.edu. Ms. Anthony is in room 132-C, Kaufman Hall.

College of Health Sciences

Admission to a major in the College of Health Sciences is managed through a separate application process, apart from admission to the University.  Acceptance to the University does not constitute or guarantee acceptance into a health science major.  Click here for specific admission criteria and processes by major:  http://hs.odu.edu/advising/admission.shtml

All pre-majors are advised in the College of Health Sciences Advising Center.  Advising appointments for pre-majors can be scheduled by calling 757-683-5137 or stopping by the Advising Center, room 2112 of the Health Sciences Building at 4608 Hampton Blvd. between 46th and 47th Streets. The main entrance for the building is located on the 46th Street side of the building and signing up outside the office door.  A 30-minute appointment is required for every student every semester.  Your Advisor Block will be lifted by your advisor at this pre-registration appointment.

College of Sciences

The major declaration process in the College of Sciences varies based on the student's intended major. 

To declare a major as Biology, you should make an appointment to meet with an advisor in MGB 236 to review the Biology major requirements.  Let your advisor know if you wish to declare a specific concentration (marine biology or secondary education) within the biology degree.  Please click here for more information: http://sci.odu.edu/biology/academics/major.shtml

To declare a major in Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences or Physics, contact the chief departmental advisor.  To find the appropriate advisor, please check here:

Honors College

Admission to the Honors College is competitive and is based upon a selected group of first-year students based upon high school grade point average and curriculum, Scholastic Aptitude Test scores, class rank, and a written personal statement.  Transfer students are eligible to apply and are admitted based upon a 3.8 transfer GPA, the ability to complete at least 48 credits towards the ODU degree in residence, and two letters of recommendation from college faculty members.  The application can be found at: http://www.odu.edu/forms_admin/viewform.php?formid=4997

All students accepted to the Honors College are initially advised by Mr. Brian Kurisky, Director of Advising and Academic Support for the Honors College, on the requirements for the program.  He also advises those accepted to the Honors College who are exploring majors as well as those students who may need academic support.  Those Honors College students who have selected a major are advised by their appropriate academic college.  Mr. Kurisky is available to assist students with advising questions concerning the Honors College requirements at (757) 683-4865.  He is located in room 2000A of the Student Success Center.

Center for Major Exploration

Students who are uncertain about a major or need assistance in exploring majors and/or careers are advised by professional advisors in the Center for Major Exploration, room 1500 Webb Center.  Under the direction of Mr. G. W. Thompson, students meet with an advisor a minimum of three times during the semester.  All students are required to schedule an initial advising interview, attend a Decision Making Workshop, and prepare for the next semester's registration in a pre-registration appointment.  Throughout this process, the student will be referred to resources that help them explore possible majors and careers.
